October, also known as “Pink Month,” is a time dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer among women and men. Today, we want to share five warning signs of breast cancer so you can identify them and visit an oncology specialist if necessary.
At Advanced Fertility Center Cancun, we aim to promote awareness about breast cancer.
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death from malignant tumors in Mexican women, and in many cases it is detected too late.
Breast cancer develops when cells in the mammary gland begin to multiply abnormally, forming a malignant tumor that can invade nearby tissues or spread if not detected early.
Recognizing early signs can make the difference between a more successful treatment and a more complicated condition. Below, we share five warning signs that should not be overlooked.
Don’t ignore these 5 warning signs of breast cancer
- Lump or palpable mass in the breast or armpit.
This is the most common sign: a new, firm lump—painless or slightly painful—that feels different from normal tissue.
- Changes in the size, shape, or contour of the breast.
A sudden increase in size or noticeable differences between one breast and the other may indicate tissue changes. Thickening or skin retraction may also appear.
- Skin changes or texture alterations.
If the skin looks dimpled, puckered, or resembles an orange peel, it may be due to a tumor pulling inward on the tissues.
- Nipple retraction or changes.
A nipple that becomes inverted, pulls inward, or changes direction can be a warning sign. Nipple discharge not related to breastfeeding is also concerning.
- Swelling, redness, or localized pain without an apparent cause.
Partial or complete swelling of the breast, warm or irritated skin, persistent pain, or discomfort may be signs of aggressive forms of breast cancer, such as inflammatory breast cancer.

What should you do if you notice any of these signs?
-
Don’t panic, many breast changes over time are not cancerous, but they do require monitoring and evaluation.
-
Schedule an appointment with an oncology or gynecology specialist experienced in breast health.
-
Request tests such as a mammogram, breast ultrasound, or biopsy, as recommended by your doctor.
-
Do not postpone the evaluation, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the treatment options.
-
Follow your doctor’s recommendations and seek emotional support when needed.
